New Life Thrift Lend-a-Hand Prison Ministries Work Projects Donations

 

 

The Association's Donations Committee evaluated and chose to support the following organizations in the 2003 ministry year (in order from largest to smallest contribution):

The total amount donated for the 2003-2004 ministry year was in excess of $190,000! The Association thanks all the volunteers of the New Life Thrift Shop and all churches, individuals, and organizations which contributed to help make these exciting grants on behalf of others in need.

The Way Home

v     A program designed to help ex-offenders make a successful transition from Sussex Correctional Institution into the community.

v     The goal is to reduce the rate of recidivism and to help these persons become productive members of the community.

Westside New Beginnings

v     A community center which serves young and old alike in West Rehoboth, one of the poorest communities in the state.

v     The center assists efforts to overcome drugs, crime and blight that cripple the area. 

v     After school mentoring, summer educational and recreational sessions, field trips, community cleanup drives and other activities are parts of their program.

Rehoboth Day Care Center

 

v     Enriching the lives of low-income parents and children for 34 years. 

v     Between 40 and 45 children, ages 1 to 10 receive breakfast and a hot lunch every day. 

v     Most children receive financial support from the state. 

v     Some are latchkey children coming after school. 

v     Qualified caregivers lovingly provide the care and educational programs.

La Esperanza

v     A faith based, non-denominational provider of services to Hispanic immigrants and others residing in Sussex County.

v     Most, because of language, cultural or economic barriers, are limited in their access to existing services.

Meals on Wheels

v     Delivers two meals a day to area homebound residents who are sixty years or older. 

v     Many seniors are able to continue living in their own homes reducing the need for placement in long term care facilities.

Casa San Francisco

v     Attempts to break the cycle of poverty and dependence through services to low and very low-income persons including:

a.      Basic food and shelter
b.      Education programs
c.      Referrals to other remedial services

v     Plans are underway to eliminate shelter beds in Milton and construct new shelter facilities in Western Sussex County

Delaware Hospice

v     Provides terminally ill patients the choice to spend the last days of their lives in the comfort of their homes, surrounded by friends and family.

v     Inpatient support at local healthcare facilities can also be provided.

Sussex County AIDS Council

v     Offers HIV prevention information and anonymous testing to the community at large.

v     Provides clients emergency financial assistance, supplemental food and transportation to medical appointments. 

v     Pastors, county agencies and other charitable organizations make referrals.

Sussex Teen Court

v     Community-based intervention dedicated to reducing and preventing Juvenal delinquencies.

v     Enhances youth awareness, accountability, and positive development. 

v     Provides an alternative to the formal court process for offenders ages 9 to 16. 

v     Benefits the defendant, the teen volunteers and the community

Young Life

v     Provides youth with life-changing experiences including fun and adventure.

v     Programs built around these fundamentals:

a)     Christ
b)     Contact Work
c)     Club
d)     Camp
e)     Campaigners and Committees 

v     Leaders are committed to the youth they serve and support them through the often-turbulent teenage years.

“Little Ones” Lutheran Preschool

v     A half day preschool providing practical help and education along with caring support to build strong families while protecting children.

Habitat for Humanity

v     With the help of the recipient family providing “sweat equity” hours of labor, Habitat builds modest homes for families who could not otherwise afford to purchase a house. 

v     Building materials are frequently donated, volunteers provide the labor, and the new homeowner is provided with an interest free mortgage which they can afford.

St. Vincent De Paul Society

v     Two separate organizations that provide financial, intellectual, and other basic needs to area residents. 

v     While financial assistance is limited to rent, fuel, electricity and medical needs, members refer to other agencies for assistance in other areas.

Pregnancy Care Center of Sussex

Offers compassionate and life-affirming services, including:

v     Free pregnancy tests
v    
Pregnancy support counseling
v    
Post-abortion counseling
v    
Bible study
v    
Material assistance
v    
Abstinence education
v    
Community awareness speakers.

 Children and Families First (formerly Perinatal Association of Delaware)

v     Now a part of Children and Families First, they are concerned about the state’s high infant mortality and low birth weight rates. 

v     The Association’s Resource Mothers have helped thousands of at-risk pregnant women to have healthier babies by linking them with prenatal care and other services.

Sussex County Senior Services

 

v     To promote and maintain the highest quality of life and independence by developing and providing services that meet the continuing needs of mature adults fifty and older.

The Home Of The Brave

 

v     A homeless veterans shelter open to all eligible veterans, both male and female.

Lewes Aid

 

v     Offers immediate, one- time-only aid to the needy in the Lewes area. 

v     Pastors and charitable organizations in the area make referrals.

Pop Warner Little Scholars
Football and Spirit Leading

 

v     Provides an opportunity for boys and girls ages 5 to 16 to become involved in football and spirit (cheer) leading. 

v     Some children go on to participate in school-sponsored sports but for those who do not, Pop Warner provides participation at any level. 

v     Scholarships are available to those who are unable to pay the admission fee.

Read-Aloud Delaware

 

v     Volunteers read to children, one on one, in Day Care Centers, Nursery Schools and YMCA’s. 

v     Reading helps to prepare preschool children to become literate students, employees, and ultimately adults who will impart their love of reading to future generations.
